
A session at the World Congress of Jewish Studies has been organized by Yael Wilfand on behalf of the ERC project Judaism and Rome.
This session, which shall include a presentation of the Judaism and Rome project as an introduction, is entitled “Wars (pulmusim) between Israel and Rome in the Eyes of the Sages”.
The speakers are:
• Yair Furstenberg (Hebrew University of Jerusalem): “Was there a ‘Period of Persecution’: Rabbinic Martyrdom Traditions and Roman Policy”
• Yuval Shahar (Ben Gurion University of the Negev): “The tannaitic ban on teaching Greek: remembering Diaspora destruction, rejecting compromise with Rome”
• Yael Wilfand (CNRS, ERC Judaism and Rome): “The Roman Context for the Rabbinic Ban on Teaching Greek to Sons”
